Australia mining scholarships for FilipinosSep. 17, 2009
MANILA, Philippines — Australia is offering Filipino college students scholarships to study mining-related courses like mining engineering, geology, metallurgy, mine safety, environmental management, and community development, the playground equipment Australian embassy here said.

The scholarship program, which will start this October 2009, will be offered in four universities: University of the Philippines-Diliman, Cebu Institute of Technology, University of Southeastern Philippines, and the Mindanao State University.

The Australian Government Aid Program, through the inflatable bouncers Philippines-Australia Human Resources Development, on Wednesday launched the Philippines-Australia Resources Education Excellence Program (Pareep), the new undergraduate scholarship program aimed to enhance Philippine mining industry.

“Australian expertise in responsible and sustainable mining is recognized globally. We are pleased to contribute and assist in the development of the mining industry in the Philippines,” Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Rod Smith said at the launch.

“The Philippines has huge potential to further develop its mineral wealth to provide local employment and investment opportunities that can contribute substantially to economic development and poverty alleviation,” he added.

Pareep is supported by industry partners, including the Philippine Society of Mining Engineers, the Geological Society of the Philippines, the swing machines Philippine Mineral Exploration Association, the Society of Metallurgical Engineers of the Philippines, the Australia-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce, and the Chamber of Mines.

Pareep will be funded by Australian and Philippine mining companies, including: Sagittarius Mines Inc, Leighton Contractors (Philippines), Rusina Mining, Filminera Resources and CGA Mining, Orica Philippines, and European Nickel.

Vengeful JRU spills San BedaSep. 17, 2009
MANILA, Philippines - Putting to rest doubts about its title credentials, Jose Rizal U snapped San Beda’s 12-game winning run with a masterful 77-64 conquest in the pearl jewelry 85th NCAA basketball tournament at the jampacked FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Bombers, last season’s losing finalists to the Lions, figured out a way to stop tall American center Sudan Daniel, while Marc Cagoco provided the scoring punch in the final period as JRU gained a share of second with its victim at 13-2.

The 5-foot-10 Cagoco, playing his final year for JRU, struck hardest in a four-minute stretch in the fourth period and finished with a game-high 19 points as the Bombers avenged an 81-96 defeat to the Lions in the first round.

Earlier, Letran needed a late explosion to down Perpetual Help, 80-60, and assure itself of at least a playoff for the last Final Four berth.

Kevin Alas picked the right time to shine by firing a career-high 19 points, including 10 in the final period, to lift the Knights to their 11th win in pearl earrings 16 games.

“We’re happy because we’re close to clinching a Final Four spot,” said Letran mentor Louie Alas, who also posted his 100th victory as coach in the NCAA.

“But we can’t just settle for the playoff spot.”

After the Lions trimmed a 12-point lead to three, 57-60, with five minutes left, Cagoco knocked in 10 of the Bombers’ next 12 points with his last basket— a stepback triple—giving JRU a 72-62 cushion heading into the last 1:50.

“Come winning time, we had to go to him because he wanted the pearl pendant ball and make the plays,” said Vanguardia.

Finding the lane clogged by a swarm of JRU players, the 6-foot-8 Daniel, who exploded for 31 points in their first-round victory, was limited to just seven.

The win strengthened the Bombers’ bid for one of the two twice-to-beat bonuses in the Final Four.
